DADIMA'S SARI

In the clothes line hangs my Dadi's sari,
It is blue with red border and has golden zari.

The sunshine makes the sari dance and leap.
With a whiff and a breeze it falls off the line into a big heap.

With little gentle steps I go and pick it up,
While I tie it around me I hear my Ma scream --stop ! stop !

My rolly polly Dadi comes to my rescue,
"When you get married this sari will be a gift from me to you."

"But Dadi I love your golden Bandhej too."
"Do not worry I will also keep that just for you."

Benarasi, Dharmavaram, Gadhwal and Baluchari,
Dadi says they are all for me.

"But Dadi I need a boy to get married to."
"Don't worry we will find a handsome young prince, just like your Dadu."

Charpai se

As an adult it breaks my heart to see small children cooped up in the so called luxury of their home with PSPS and Play station as their best friend , it hurts to see that they never learnt climbing a tree, they never got the joy of stealing raw mangoes in the afternoon, it hurts to see that these children never got a chance to push stones on their way home from school , my heart bleeds for them ------in one of these moments I got a spark and an idea of why not share my experience of growing up in a dusty small town in the 70s with today's children --- hence my blog CHARPAI SE -- Poems for Indian children in English. What ever I write I write it from my heart, no fancy words, no fancy frills just simple words and rich childhood experience mingled with the shades of Neem trees, sprinkled with the essence of cow dung, flavored with the spices of tamarind chutney and stirred with the memories of a small town girl who loved climbing mango trees.
